YANKEE GAS TO ENSURE NATURAL GAS DELIVERY TO PARTS OF SOUTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT DURING TEMPORARY INTERSTATE PIPELINE SHUTDOWN
Sandy St. Pierre
BERLIN, Conn., June 14, 2005—Yankee Gas Services Company will temporarily use liquefied natural gas (LNG) to serve its customers in parts of Waterford, New London and East Lyme next week during a scheduled shutdown of the Algonquin interstate pipeline that delivers natural gas to Yankee’s gate station in Waterford. The temporary interstate pipeline shutdown is expected to occur from Monday, June 20 to Thursday, June 23 to allow Algonquin to conduct regularly scheduled maintenance on its system.
Yankee Gas has arranged to temporarily use LNG in its distribution system to ensure its customers receive continuous and reliable service throughout the duration of Algonquin’s shutdown. The LNG will be injected into Yankee’s distribution system at its regulator station on Ferry Street in New London. The temporary LNG facility will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the shutdown. Local public officials also have been notified of the shutdown.
LNG is natural gas that is cooled to a temperature of -260 degrees Fahrenheit. LNG, like natural gas, is colorless, odorless, non-corrosive and non-toxic. It will be put through vaporizers to return it to its gaseous state before it is injected into Yankee’s distribution system. Because of the great temperature difference between LNG and hot summer weather, it is possible a water vapor cloud could form. This is a normal part of the process and does not pose any safety hazard. It will look something like the cloud that forms when dry ice is exposed to the air. After the vaporization process, an odorant will be added. The odorant gives natural gas its “rotten eggs” smell, making a leak easy to detect.
Normal operations are expected to resume by Thursday, June 23. Customers should not notice any difference in their service during this time. Customers should direct their questions to Yankee’s Customer Service Center, weekdays, during normal business hours, at 1-800-989-0900.
