Yankee Gas Reminds Customers Winter Heating Assistance Available
Contingency Heating Assistance Program (CHAP) funding released
Mary B. Ingarra
BERLIN , Conn., February 18, 2004 (NYSE: NU)
-- Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities System, reminds seniors, people with disabilities and families with children who are having difficulty paying their winter heating bills that they may be eligible for heating assistance under the state's Contingency Heating Assistance Program (CHAP). CHAP can provide up to $200 in assistance to pay for fuel oil, electric or natural gas heat for Connecticut households with incomes up to 60 percent of the statewide median income.
With President Bush's approval of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Block Grant, Connecticut will receive an additional $3.3 million in contingency funds, allowing the state to expand the benefits program and raise the income limit, making more households eligible for aid. Under the newly expanded program, an individual, senior citizen or person with a disability with an annual income of up to $25,745, and a family of three with an annual income of up to $41,588 would be eligible for CHAP. Customers needing assistance paying their winter heating bills can contact InfoLine at 211 for the number of their local Community Action Agency.
The State of Connecticut anticipates that 13,700 CHAP eligible households will need help paying their heating bills this winter. Yankee Gas customers can also help provide emergency energy assistance to those in need by checking the "Add a Dollar" box and adding one dollar to their natural gas bills to support Operation Fuel. Last year, Connecticut residents contributed more than $402,000 to Operation Fuel. Additional funds for Operation Fuel comes from Yankee Gas and its shareholders as well as the state's other utility companies, religious organizations, businesses and foundations.
The company offers several payment options including a Budget Payment Plan to spread the costs of higher winter heating bills throughout the entire year, and a Matching Payment Program to help low or fixed-income customers pay off past-due balances on their accounts. For information about these programs, call Yankee Gas Customer Service at (800) 989-0900. To make payment arrangements, please call Credit and Collections at (800) 438-2278.
