MERIDEN, Conn., July 26, 2001 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities System, has announced a major expansion of its natural gas distribution system in Woodbury – part of the first phase of a multi-year growth plan to make natural gas available to more homes and businesses throughout the state. This first phase represents an investment of approximately $23 million.
“This expansion project is another reflection of our commitment to grow our gas distribution system, as we agreed to with state regulators when we merged with Northeast Utilities a year ago,” said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “Today, we serve only one customer in Woodbury, so we are excited about this project because natural gas will now be an energy option for many in the community."

Expansion brings energy options
"I look forward to having natural gas in more areas of town, said Dick Crane, Woodbury's First Selectman. "It is a welcome energy option for our businesses, residents, and especially for town buildings," he added.
Yankee will work closely with local businesses and homeowners to coordinate installation of service lines and meters, connecting them to the new gas mains. The company also is prepared to assist with equipment selections or recommendations and has financing programs that can help both businesses and homeowners.

Construction route, timing
Yankee will install nearly 38,200 feet of main in Woodbury, and about 4,000 feet of main in neighboring Southbury. Construction will begin at Yankee's existing distribution system in Southbury, moving east along Oak Tree Road to Main Street (Route 6). The piping will extend into the K-Mart Plaza in Southbury, providing access to natural gas for the retail and commercial businesses in the plaza. The main will continue north on Route 6 to Middle Road Turnpike in Woodbury, east on Middle Road Turnpike, then north on Minortown Road to the Nonnewaug High School entrance. The main will make natural gas available to the town's business districts, Town Hall, and several school buildings. Construction is expected to begin in late summer.

Fuel diversity, environmental benefits
The planned expansion project will offer a new energy choice to consumers in Woodbury. The availability of natural gas, consumers will have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. It gives businesses more choices for heating, cooling, manufacturing processing and even cooking. Homeowners also have more options; natural gas not only can be used for heat and hot water, but also for cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters and much more.
The expansion of natural gas service also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And it’s piped directly to the home or business, eliminating the need for storage tanks.
