PREVENT PIPELINE DAMAGE: CALL BEFORE YOU DIG
BERLIN, Conn., June 17, 2009 — With summer construction season in full swing, Yankee Gas reminds excavators to "call before you dig" (CBYD) to protect public safety and prevent rupturing or damaging utility lines, such as natural gas mains and other underground utility services. The law requires anyone who plans to use power or mechanized equipment for excavation to notify the CBYD central clearinghouse at least two full working days before the start of the project. The call and the service are free.
"Recently we’ve experienced contractors digging into our lines — situations that could have been avoided had the contractors followed the law and procedures and contacted Call Before You Dig for a markout of our facilities," says Vice President of Operations Marc Andrukiewicz. "With 3,200 miles of distribution and service pipeline in the 71 cities and towns served by Yankee Gas, safety is always our top priority. "
Although pipelines are the safest form of transportation of energy products, in 2008 the Yankee Gas system was hit 75 times where excavators were at fault. While these miles of pipeline are housed underground and out of sight, they should not be out of mind. Call the CBYD clearinghouse toll-free, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1-800-922-4455. Or visit CBYD on the Web at
