BERLIN, Conn., January 4, 2008 — Even with arctic air bearing down on Connecticut, customers of Yankee Gas Services Company are staying warm and cozy. On January 3, the company saw demand for natural gas reach a near-record high of 332,379 MMBtu. This represents the second highest sendout day ever for Yankee Gas. To meet the demand, Yankee Gas relied heavily on its recently completed liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Waterbury. On January 3, the facility produced 39,999 MMBtu of natural gas, meeting approximately 12 percent of the total sendout.

“Thanks to our new LNG facility, we’re easily meeting demand,” said president and chief operating officer Raymond P. Necci. “The facility is performing admirably and benefiting customers, as planned.”

This $108 million facility holds the vapor equivalent of 1.2 billion cubic feet (BCF) of LNG, or 14.6 million gallons — enough natural gas to heat 85,000 homes for a month. The tank was filled to capacity by October 31, 2007. The facility gives Yankee Gas greater flexibility to manage its natural gas supply portfolio, allowing the company to buy natural gas in periods of low demand and lower cost, store it in liquid form, and use it during the coldest days of winter when prices are usually much higher, or when demand may exceed the ability of pipelines to transport natural gas to Connecticut.

Yankee Gas customers are also being served easily because over the past two years we’ve increased the amount of natural gas we have in underground storage by 50 percent, bringing our total to 12 BCF, or enough natural gas to heat 133,000 homes for an entire year. “These supplies of natural gas enhance our ability to meet the increased demand we’re experiencing because of this arctic blast,” says Jay Fletcher, manager of gas supply.

Yankee Gas Services Company (Yankee Gas) is Connecticut’s largest natural gas distribution company, delivering safe, reliable natural gas service to approximately 200,000 customers in 71 cities and towns.
