MERIDEN, Conn., June 14, 2001 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, has announced a major expansion of its natural gas distribution system in Suffield – part of the first phase of a $23 million, multi-year growth plan to make natural gas available to more homes and businesses throughout the state. The Suffield expansion project includes installing gas mains through the central business district to deliver natural gas to the town’s new high school, currently under construction, as well as several surrounding residential areas and planned subdivisions.
“This expansion project reflects our commitment to growth of our gas distribution system, as we agreed to with state regulators when we merged with Northeast Utilities a year ago,” said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “We are excited about this project because it will allow us to offer natural gas service to consumers in areas of town that are not currently served, giving them more choices in meeting their energy needs.”

Expansion supports local growth
“We’re pleased with Yankee’s plans to extend natural gas to more business and homeowners in town,” said Elaine Sarsynski, director of Economic Development in Suffield. “I have been getting calls from businesses and homeowners asking when natural gas would be available. It’s great that we’re now at the point where we can tell them it’s coming.
"The town is really in a growth mode right now. We're seeing a lot of retail and commercial growth, so the expansion of natural gas in the area will support continued growth and provide businesses with energy options," Sarsynski added.
Yankee will work closely with local businesses and homeowners to coordinate installation of service lines and meters, connecting them to the new gas mains. The company also is prepared to assist with equipment selections or recommendations and has financing programs that can help both business and homeowners.

Construction route, timing
Yankee will install nearly 47,000 feet of gas main through the central business district to the new high school and another 12,300 feet to serve planned residential subdivisions. This extension also will serve surrounding residential areas. It will start at Yankee’s existing distribution system on East Street, come down Bridge Street onto North Main Street, down Mountain Road and Sheldon Street to reach the new high school. Also this year, the company will begin laying more than 12,000 feet of new mains to serve three planned residential developments. This will begin at Yankee’s existing distribution facility on Route 159 and head west to Mapleton Avenue to Halladay Avenue East. Construction is expected to begin this summer.
Yankee expects further expansions in the town as long term plans for economic development and growth occur.

Fuel diversity, environmental benefits
The planned expansion project will offer a new energy choice to consumers in Suffield. Previously, much of the town was served only by oil and electricity. With the availability of natural gas, consumers have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. It gives businesses more choices for heating, cooling, manufacturing processing and even cooking. While homeowners also have more options; natural gas not only can be used for heat and hot water, but also for cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters and much more.
The addition of natural gas service also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And it’s piped directly to the home or business, eliminating the need for storage tanks.
