News Release
Yankee Gas to Ensure Natural Gas Delivery to Torrington and Winsted During Temporary Interstate Pipeline Shut Down
Office:(860) 665-6212
BERLIN, Conn., July 23, 2002 (NYSE: NU) - Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities System, will temporarily use liquefied natural gas (LNG) to serve its Torrington and Winsted customers during a scheduled shut down of the Tennessee interstate pipeline that supplies natural gas to Yankee’s Winsted and Torrington gate stations. The temporary pipeline shutdown will occur from Thursday, August 8 to Wednesday, August 14, to allow Tennessee to replace a gas main that runs under the Farmington River in Massachusetts.

To make certain its customers in Torrington and Winsted will not be affected by the shut down, Yankee Gas has arranged to use LNG in its distribution system. In Torrington, three 65-foot trailers of LNG will be located in the parking lot of the Yankee Gas service yard off East Main Street. In Winsted, the LNG trailers will be located at the Yankee Gas/Connecticut Light and Power Company property near the corner of Case Avenue and Gay Street in the center of town.

LNG is natural gas that has been cooled to a temperature of about -260 Fahrenheit. LNG is odorless, colorless, non-corrosive and non-toxic. It will be put through vaporizers to return it into a gaseous state before it is injected into Yankee’s distribution system. Because of the great temperature difference between LNG and hot summer weather, it is possible a water vapor cloud could form. This is a normal part of the process and does not pose any safety hazard. After the vaporization process, an odorant will be added.

Yankee Gas will secure both areas which will be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a precaution, sand bags are being placed around the perimeter of the area in the unlikely event of a leak. The Torrington and Winsted fire and police departments are receiving LNG training prior to the shutdown.
