Planning ahead for the future[

BERLIN, Conn., April 7, 2003 (NYSE: NU) –
Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, is upgrading its natural gas distribution system in Stamford, installing larger gas mains from the north end of town to the growing commercial and retail area in the southern part of the city. Approximately 18,000 feet – more than three miles - of 16-inch steel gas main will be installed in multiple phases beginning on High Ridge Road and working south toward the area where a number of commercial and residential projects, including Admiral's Wharf, Archstone Apartments and a Target department store, are planned.
Increased capacity to serve local growth
“We are upgrading our natural gas distribution system to meet the increasing demand for clean, efficient natural gas in areas of Stamford that are growing rapidly," said Chris Beschler, vice president, Operations at
Yankee Gas. "While the existing natural gas system in Stamford meets current demand, new retail, residential and commercial developments planned for this area will require more energy. This project will insure that our customers will have a reliable supply of natural gas to meet their growing demands now and in the future," Beschler added.
Construction route, timing
The first two phases of the construction project, to serve businesses in the area, are expected to begin in April and will be completed in late summer/early fall. The first phase will begin on High Ridge Road at Terrace Avenue and extend to Cold Spring Road. The second phase will proceed on Cold Spring Road and Washington Boulevard to the intersection of Tresser Boulevard. Gas mains also are planned on Pacific Street, from the intersection of Washington Boulevard to Market Street.
