STATE’S NATURAL GAS UTILITIES REMIND CONTRACTORS: CALL BEFORE YOU DIG
State’s one-call system can be reached toll-free at 1-800-922-4455
BERLIN, Conn., April 27, 2006
—As the spring and summer construction season begins, the state’s four natural gas utilities—Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG), The Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG), Yankee Gas Services Company and Norwich Public Utilities—remind excavators to “call before you dig” to prevent rupturing or damaging utility lines, such as natural gas mains and other underground utility services.
Call Before You Dig, Inc. (CBYD) is Connecticut’s free, one-call system whose primary objective is to prevent damage to underground utilities in the state. An excavator need call only one statewide toll-free number,
to notify the CBYD clearinghouse. At no charge to the contractor, CBYD then notifies the owners and operators of underground facilities, such as natural gas utilities, of proposed excavation work.
“The stated purpose of CBYD is to protect the public safety with regard to excavations near underground utility facilities,” said John F Bilda, General Manager, Norwich Public Utilities. “CBYD operators are professionally trained to obtain the specific information necessary to allow personnel to accurately mark out underground utilities. Correctly identifying these utilities prevents injuries to the public as well as avoids costly damage to an underground utility.
Not only is CBYD the law, it is the only smart thing to do.”
The law requires anyone who plans to use power or mechanized equipment for excavation to notify the CBYD central clearinghouse at least two full working days before the start of the project. CBYD also must be notified before any permits are secured from any public agency.
“We work with Call Before You Dig and contractors to make sure that underground natural gas lines are properly located and marked before excavation begins,” said Kevin Dupre, director of Gas Operations, Yankee Gas, and a board member of CBYD. “The purpose of the law is to protect the excavator and the public from serious injuries that can result if an underground utility is damaged.”
“Safety is always our top priority. Remember to protect yourself and those around you to avoid underground utility lines by becoming educated and following all of the "Call Before You Dig" regulations," said Robert M. Allessio, President and CEO of Connecticut Natural Gas and The Southern Connecticut Gas Company.
Once approved for excavation by CBYD, contractors must follow strict guidelines for digging around and near underground utilities. For example, excavators must dig by hand around natural gas mains and services. And excavation notices from CBYD must be renewed every 30 days. For more information on specific guidelines, call the CBYD clearinghouse toll-free, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1-800-922-4455. Or visit CBYD on the Web at
