Yankee Gas Continues Work at Propane Storage Tanks in Danbury, Shelton
ERLIN, CT, October 30, 2009:
In early November, weather permitting, Yankee Gas will continue performing routine maintenance at their propane storage tanks in Danbury and Shelton. This work will include a safe burn off, or flare, of the propane vapor from the tanks. Yankee Gas personnel will be on site to monitor the procedure at all times.
Flaring means a flame, fueled by the residual propane vapor , that will be visible to passers-by. Yankee Gas is alerting local officials, including fire and police departments, as well as customers and the media, to inform them of plans and minimize any surprise or concern from people noticing the flaring.
Yankee Gas Propane Storage Facilities
Danbury: Pahquioque Ave
Shelton: Howe Avenue and Cornell Street
Storage and Capacity
Danbury: 10 above-ground tanks, 276,250 gallons of propane
Shelton: 6 underground tanks, 335,244 gallons of propane
Capacity does not reflect current inventory of propane. Tanks are nearly empty.
Regulators at the Gas Pipeline Safety Unit of the Department of Public Utility Control along with the local fire marshal have reviewed and approved this purge and flare plan.
Yankee Gas first removed liquid propane from the tanks, followed by a vaporization process to recover most remaining propane. Flaring is the final step in purging the residual, unrecoverable propane from the tanks.
