YANKEE GAS STARTS FILLING EAGLE STREET LNG TANK
Berlin, Conn., June 28, 2007 — Yankee Gas Services Company has started to fill its liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank in Waterbury, Conn. Toward the end of June, as many as 20 trucks per day will deliver LNG to the Eagle Street facility. It will take several months to completely fill the tank.
LNG is routinely transported in trucks specially designed for carrying LNG and other fuels. These trucks are heavily regulated by the Department of Transportation and have an excellent safety record.
“This is a major milestone,” said Raymond P. Necci, president and chief operating officer, Yankee Gas. “Completion of the $108 million facility will provide benefits to our customers for decades to come.”
The facility is expected to be in service for the 2007-2008 heating season, giving Yankee Gas greater flexibility to manage its energy portfolio. The facility will allow the company to buy natural gas in periods of low demand and typically lower cost, store it in liquid form, and use it during the coldest days of winter when prices are typically much higher.
On June 1, Yankee Gas received approval from the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) to start filling the tank. Over the past 30 months, the project team and its contractors have worked tirelessly with the Gas Pipeline Safety Unit to review and approve more than 5,500 engineering submittals. “The facility will continue to be subject to DPUC oversight, both as the project comes to its conclusion and in its day-to-day operations,” said LNG Project Director Marc Andrukiewicz.
When full, the tank will hold the equivalent of 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas, enough gas to heat 85,000 homes for a month.
