BERLIN, Conn., April 5, 2006 –The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) and Yankee Gas Services Company (Yankee Gas), subsidiaries of the Northeast Utilities System, have announced their full support for Connecticut’s Work Zone Safety Awareness Week campaign, April 2-8, 2006. This year’s campaign message is “DON’T ZONE OUT” Pay Attention or Pay Double.
To show their support for the campaign, CL&P and Yankee Gas display “Slow Down for Work Zones” bumper stickers on their work vehicles. In addition, representatives from both utilities attended the Connecticut Department of Transportation press conference today at the Interstate 84 eastbound rest area in Southington.
Yankee Gas and CL&P can have up to 800 work vehicles on the road on any given day.
“Our employees are working and traveling the highways every day, so roadway safety is one of our top concerns,” said Dana Louth, vice president, Energy Delivery Services, CL&P. “We are committed to the safety of our employees and want them to return home safely to their families at the end of the work day.”
“Construction season in Connecticut means there’s an increase in the number of utility employees working near or in roadways,” said Kevin Dupre, director of Gas Operations, Yankee Gas. “We join with CL&P and other Connecticut utilities in asking motorists to look out for our employees, slow down and pay attention to speed limits when driving through work zones.”
Sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, “Work Zone Safety Awareness Week” was developed to reduce the number of serious injury crashes occurring in construction or work zone areas. In Connecticut in 2003, work zone crashes totaled 1,176, which was a 13 percent reduction from 1995, according to the department.
