Yankee Expansion Brings Natural Gas to East Lyme
New energy choices to benefit businesses, residents; supports local growth
Sandy St. Pierre
BERLIN, Conn., September 25, 2002 (NYSE: NU) –
Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, will expand its natural gas distribution system into East Lyme – a community that has never been served by natural gas. The project is part of the second phase of a multi-year growth plan to make natural gas available to more homes and businesses throughout the state. The East Lyme expansion project includes extending existing mains on Route 1 in Waterford through the central business district of East Lyme and along Flanders Road.
“This expansion project reflects our continued commitment to grow
our gas distribution system, ensuring that communities have the energy options that support local economic development initiatives and consumer expectations," said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “In today's technology-driven economy, having reliable energy, as well as energy options are critical to business growth and consumer lifestyles."
Expansion supports local growth
"We believe the expansion of natural gas into our commercial district will be a great leveler for East Lyme," said Wayne Fraser, First Selectman. "It will make the town more competitive, helping us attract potential new businesses, and give existing businesses greater flexibility in their energy choices," he added. The natural gas service will also support plans for development near Exit 74 off Interstate-95 and Route 161, Fraser noted.
Yankee will work closely with local businesses and homeowners to coordinate installation of service lines and meters, connecting them to the new gas mains. The company also is prepared to assist with equipment selections or recommendations and has financing programs that can help both businesses and homeowners.
Construction route, timing
Over the next several weeks, Yankee Gas Services Company will be installing natural gas pipes on Parkway Road North in Waterford, moving west to Oil Mill Road, then south along Oil Mill Road to Route 1 to the East Lyme town line. Construction in East Lyme will continue west along Route 1 to just beyond the intersection of Route 161, the area known as Flanders Four Corners. From that intersection, gas mains will be installed north on Chesterfield Road to the high school, and south on Flanders Road to Industrial Park Road.
Fuel diversity, environmental benefits
The planned expansion project will offer a new energy choice to consumers in East Lyme, a town that has never had natural gas service. With the availability of natural gas, East Lyme consumers have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of energy equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. It gives businesses more choices for heating, cooling, manufacturing processing and even cooking. Homeowners also have more options; natural gas not only can be used for heat and hot water, but also for cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters and much more.
The addition of natural gas service also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And it’s piped directly to the home or business, eliminating the need for storage tanks.
