BERLIN, Connecticut -- February 28, 2007
-- The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) has announced that it has completed the installation of electric service to Yankee Gas Services Company's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Waterbury. The hook-up, which cost about $150,000, is a major step in bringing the project closer to completion.
"They will need the power to do a lot of things at that plant," said Robert Drain, director of CL&P's Western Division. "The site is taking shape very nicely and we're pleased we could play a part in an initiative that will greatly benefit Yankee Gas' customers around the state."
When the facility is up and running later this year, its electrical consumption will be nearly 22 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. "Electric power is vital in receiving, storing and distributing LNG," said Marc Andrukiewicz, project director of the Waterbury LNG facility. "Now that the power is on, we are 91 percent complete through the end of February and expect to be filling up the tank in late spring."
Construction crews are working around the clock to install high-efficiency insulation on the tank, which is approximately 150 feet high and 158 feet in diameter. When full, it will hold the equivalent of 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The facility is expected to be in service for the 2007-2008 heating season, giving Yankee Gas greater flexibility to manage its energy portfolio and reducing the impact of seasonal price fluctuations on customers.
