Yankee Gas School Safety Program Reaches More Than 6,700 Connecticut Fourth Graders
Safety program presented at 93 elementary schools
BERLIN, Conn., June 22, 2004 (NYSE:NU)
– What is found deep underground, can be used to heat your home or cook a pizza, and contributes to cleaner air? Fourth graders at 93 Connecticut elementary schools can tell you that it's natural gas. These students also know that should they detect a “rotten egg” smell in their home, they should leave and go to a neighbor's house to call the natural gas company. These are just some of the lessons more than 6,700 students in 34 Connecticut towns learned during the 2003-2004 school year thanks to an educational natural gas safety program sponsored by Yankee Gas.
The school safety program is designed to increase public awareness of natural gas safety. Nearly 40 Yankee Gas employees are involved in the safety program, which covers basic information including where natural gas comes from, how it is transported through underground pipelines to customers. The presentation also includes information on why natural gas is a clean, efficient energy source that is good for the environment.
"Teaching natural gas safety is the most important goal of our program," said Christopher L. Beschler, vice president, Operations, Yankee Gas. "Students are given scratch-n-sniff cards so they can identify the “rotten egg” smell of natural gas. We explain that because natural gas is odorless and colorless, we add a chemical to make it smell like rotten eggs, so it's easier to detect leaks. The students learn the safety steps to take if they smell natural gas," Beschler added. These steps include leaving the house immediately, without touching light switches or using any appliances and going to a neighbor's house to call the gas company.
Yankee Gas employees also get to participate in a “show and tell," letting students try on protective gear -- hard hats, safety goggles, ear protection and safety vests; and showing students what natural gas meters and valves look like.
"The School Safety Program is well-received by students and teachers. The number of schools inviting us to present our program continues to grow each year. We teach them the importance of safety and we also remind them of the importance of working hard to get a good education," said Beschler."
