BERLIN, CONN, August 6, 2003 (NYSE:NU) -- Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, has extended natural gas service to the town of East Lyme, bringing a new energy choice to local businesses and residences. The company extended existing gas mains from Route 1 in Waterford through East Lyme's central business district and along Flanders Road. Pizza Cucina, located at the Flanders Four Corners intersection, is the first natural gas service to be energized. The restaurant, specializing in pizza and fresh pastas, now uses natural gas to fire its pizza ovens and stove.

"Over the past two years, we have been growing our natural gas distribution system in communities across the state," said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. "We're proud to bring a new energy option to the businesses and residents of East Lyme and look forward to serving many more new customers in this community."

Pizza Cucina owner, Robert D'Agostino was anxious to have his restaurant connected to natural gas. "I'm from Philadelphia, where everything is powered by natural gas, so was happy to convert to gas for cooking in the restaurant." D'Agostino notes that with clean, efficient natural gas, his pizza ovens heat more quickly, saving time and energy.

Energy choices, environmental benefits
With the availability of natural gas, many East Lyme consumers will now have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of energy equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. Homeowners can use natural gas for heat and hot water, as well as for cooking, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters, clothes dryers and fireplaces. Businesses will find natural gas a clean, reliable choice for heating, cooling, manufacturing processes and cooking.

Natural gas also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And, it's piped directly to homes and businesses, eliminating the need for storage tanks that take up valuable space or pose environmental risks.

Residents and business owners interested in connecting to natural gas service can call Yankee's Business Response Center at 1-888-2YANKEE to find out if service is available to their property.
