MERIDEN, Conn., December 6, 2001, (NYSE: NU) -- Yankee Energy System, Inc. (YES), part of the Northeast Utilities system (NU), will relocate its corporate headquarters to Berlin in February 2002. The move, which includes the corporate offices of Yankee Gas Services Company, was planned as part of Yankee’s merger with NU in 2000. YES will be located in the NU South building at NU’s corporate headquarters, 107 Selden Drive, Berlin. More than 100 employees will be relocated to Berlin with the move.

“This is one of the last remaining major integration pieces of our merger with NU,” said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of YES. “It will centralize our corporate offices with our parent company and offer easier access to some key services we rely on for our business. Plus, Berlin is centrally located, making it convenient for traveling to our field offices around the state.”

“On behalf of the Town of Berlin, I proudly welcome Yankee Energy System back to the community,” said Berlin Mayor Paul C. Argazzi. “I believe that Yankee and its subsidiaries will be well-served by Berlin’s strategic highway access and its proximity to other energy-related businesses, including those in the Northeast Utilities system.”

Despite the move, Yankee remains committed to the Meriden community. Yankee Gas operates a regional work center in Meriden and supports several local events and organizations through corporate sponsorships including the Boys and Girls Club, the Daffodil Festival, Meriden Walk for Warmth, Wilcox Regional Vocational Technical School Trades Program and the Women & Families Center.

YES sold its corporate headquarters at 599 Research Parkway in Meriden in December 2000 and has leased space there until renovations to the building on NU’s campus in Berlin are completed. The Berlin building will also serve as the new corporate headquarters for Yankee Gas Services Company, Connecticut’s largest natural gas distribution company, and Yankee Energy Financial Services Company, which provides successful residential and business energy-related
financing programs.

The move is expected to occur in February 2002.

Yankee Energy System, Inc.,(YES) which is part of the Northeast Utilities system, includes Yankee Gas Services Company, the largest natural gas distribution company in Connecticut serving approximately 187,000 customers in 69 cities and towns throughout the state.
