BERLIN, Conn., December 20, 2004 (NYSE: NU) – A nine mile natural gas main extension in southeast Connecticut is now operational, delivering enhanced reliability to Yankee Gas Services Company customers and gas supply to Rhode Island. The main extension, from Route 2 in Ledyard, runs through North Stonington and Stonington and across the Stillman Avenue Bridge to Westerly, Rhode Island. It interconnects the Yankee Gas and New England Gas Company’s (NEGAS) distribution systems, allowing NEGAS to secure the delivery of natural gas supply it needs to serve its southwest Rhode Island customers. It also provides increased reliability and capacity on Yankee’s system to meet the growing demand for natural gas in southeast Connecticut.
“NEGAS needed additional natural gas capacity to meet the demand from its customers in Rhode Island at the same time we were seeing higher demand for natural gas in our service territory – beyond what our existing distribution system could reliably provide in the long term,” said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “We worked together to come up with a solution that meets each of our needs. For Yankee, this not only improved reliability for existing customers but also allowed us to meet the needs of new customers in the region who required large volumes of natural gas for their businesses.”
Construction began last spring and was completed early this fall; the pipeline began operating in early November.
The project, which was reviewed and approved by Connecticut’s Department of Public Utility Control, was called an “innovative approach to increasing capacity in New England” by the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission (FERC).
