News Release
Deadline Nears for Energy Assistance Applications;
Yankee Gas Ready to Help Customers Avoid Shut Off
Office:(860) 665-6212
BERLIN, Conn., April 14, 2004 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company, Connecticut’s largest natural gas distribution company, reminds customers that the deadline to apply for energy assistance programs is April 30. Connecticut residents can apply for energy assistance through their local Community Action Agency (CAA), which can be located by calling InfoLine at 211.
“The last thing we want to do is shut off customers who are having trouble paying their winter heating bills, especially after this winter’s extremely cold temperatures,” said Christopher L. Beschler, vice president of Operations, Yankee Gas. “We go to great lengths to prevent disconnection of customers by offering a variety of payment plans and it’s important for customers to know that programs are still available to prevent a shut off this spring. We are ready and willing to work with our customers to prevent a shutoff.”
Beschler urged customers with past-due balances that do not qualify for energy assistance to call Yankee Gas at (800) 438-2278. Customer Service representatives are available to help them set up special payment arrangements that are within their budgets.
“We do our best to provide assistance to our customers through fuel funds and other assistance, but we can’t afford to provide month-to-month free service to non-paying customers, said Beschler. “Recouping uncollected revenue is key to keeping rates low for all of our customers.”

State Energy Assistance, Yankee’s Matching Payment Program End April 30
Yankee’s Matching Payment Program helps low income gas heating customers who have past-due balances, keep their gas service year round with the possibility of forgiveness of back balances owed. To qualify, customers must apply and qualify for energy assistance and make and keep a monthly payment arrangement. For more information, call Yankee Gas toll free at (800) 438-2278.

Yankee’s Budget Payment Plan
Customers concerned about next winter’s energy bills are encouraged to sign-up for Yankee Gas’ Budget Payment Program. Available year-round, this plan provides customers with a monthly
budget, based on their annual usage, to spread out costs over time. Customers can enroll in Yankee’s Budget Payment Plan by calling a Customer Service representative toll-free at (800) 989-0900.
