BERLIN, Conn., April 6, 2004 – Yankee Gas Services Company, Connecticut’s largest natural gas distribution company, announces its full support of the state’s “Work Zone Safety Awareness Week” Campaign April 4-10 across Connecticut. Sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration, “Work Zone Safety Awareness Week” was developed to promote the safety of workers and motorists when driving through highway work zones.
“Yankee Gas is strongly committed to ensuring the safety of its employees,” said Christopher L. Beschler, vice president of Operations, Yankee Gas. “Now that construction season has arrived, there’s an increase in the number of Yankee Gas employees working near or in roadways throughout the state. We join with the Connecticut DOT in asking motorists to look out for utility and construction workers, slow down and pay attention to speed limits when traveling through work zones. This is an important initiative to keep our workers safe, so they can return home safely to their families at the end of each work day.”
To show its support for the initiative, Yankee Gas displays “Slow Down For Work Zones” bumper stickers on all of its fleet vehicles, year-round.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, there was a 55 percent increase in the number of work zone fatalities between 1997 and 2002, and four out of five of these fatalities were motorists; more than 40,000 people are injured each year as a result of work zone crashes and every seven hours someone dies in a work zone.
This week, Connecticut drivers can expect to see billboards and highway variable message signs advising them to “Slow Down for Work Zones”. State Police are enforcing speed limits at construction and maintenance work sites this week through “Operation Big Orange”. In Connecticut speeding fines are doubled in work zones and may require a court appearance. Since 1998, more than 35,000 tickets have been issued to Connecticut drivers for work zone violations.
