BERLIN, Conn., January 15, 2004 (NU:NYSE) – As record cold pushes demand for natural gas to new records across Connecticut and New England, Yankee Gas customers can be reassured that natural gas supplies are adequate to meet the demand. Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, prepares for winter heating demand through careful supply planning that includes planning for weather based on the coldest day recorded in 30 years. Through a combination of stored supplies, peaking and other contracted supplies, Yankee is meeting the demand.
“In addition to gas supplies being in good shape, our distribution system is performing very well overall and we expect that to continue,” said Dennis Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “We’ve been in frequent contact with our counterparts throughout New England to monitor the gas supply picture and gas delivery system across the region. We do this through the Northeast Gas Association’s Gas Supply Task Force, which helps to coordinates gas supply issues for the region.” Welch, who is chairman of the Northeast Gas Association, also chairs the Gas Supply Task Force for the region.
“We do not expect there will be any effect on service to our customers,” added Welch. “We invest approximately $20 million each year to ensure the safety and reliability of our physical facilities and we are seeing that pay off during this extreme weather.”
Yankee’s Interruptible customers were curtailed a week ago to ensure reliability for Firm customers (Firm customers are largely residential customers). Interruptible customers “borrow” capacity on Yankee’s distribution system and agree to give it up when that capacity is needed to serve Firm customers. In exchange, Interruptible customers receive lower rates for this lower level of reliability.

Yankee Gas Services Company (Yankee Gas) is Connecticut’s largest natural gas distribution company, delivering safe, reliable natural gas service to approximately 192,000 customers in 71 cities and towns. Yankee Gas is expanding Connecticut’s energy options and increasing customer choice by extending the availability of clean, efficient natural gas throughout the state. Yankee Gas is part of the Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU). For more information, please visit www.yankeegas.com.
