Energy Assistance Application Deadline Nears; Yankee Gas Ready to Help Customers Avoid Shut Off

ERLIN, Conn., April 19, 2002 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, reminds customers that the deadline for applying for energy assistance programs is April 30.
“The last thing we want to do is shut off customers who are having trouble paying their winter heating bills,” said Christopher Beschler, vice president, Yankee Gas. “Since last year, we’ve been telling our customers about energy assistance programs and payment options available to them. We want to remind them once again this year that there are programs available to prevent a shut off this spring.”
Beschler urged customers with past-due balances that do not qualify for energy assistance to call Yankee Gas at (800) 438-2278. Customer Service representatives are available to help customers set up special payment arrangements that are within their budgets. “Recouping uncollected revenue is our responsibility to help keep rates low for our paying customers,” said Beschler.

State Energy Assistance, Yankee’s Matching Payment Program End April 30
Connecticut residents can apply for energy assistance through their local Community Action Agency (CAA). To find their local CAA, customers can call InfoLine at 211. Yankee’s Matching Payment Program helps low income gas heating customers who are having difficulty paying their winter heating bills and provides customers with past-due balances the possibility of forgiveness of back balances owed. To qualify, customers must apply and qualify for energy assistance and make and keep a monthly payment arrangement. For more information, call Yankee Gas toll free at (800) 438-2278.

Yankee’s Budget Payment Plan
Customers concerned about next winter’s energy bills are encouraged to sign-up for Yankee Gas’ Budget Payment Program. Available year-round, this plan provides customers with a monthly
budget, based on their annual usage, to spread out costs over time. Customers can enroll in Yankee’s Budget Payment Plan by calling a Customer Service representative toll-free at (800) 989-0900.
