Two Municipalities, One Regional Group Selected for CL&P/Yankee Gas Social Media Pilot Project
BERLIN, Connecticut – June 21, 2010 –
Following a competitive application process, the Economic Development Department of Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and Yankee Gas has selected two towns and one nonprofit planning group to participate in a pilot project with social media to enhance their marketing outreach and two-way communications with the public.
The Town of South Windsor, Town of Ledyard and Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG), which serves 23 towns in the Greater Hartford area, were selected from a total of 16 applicants.
The three will each receive consulting services over the next year, valued at $8,000, courtesy of Atlas Advertising, an economic development website marketing and social media consulting firm, based in Denver, Colorado. At the conclusion of the 12-month pilot, the participants will be asked to share their lessons learned with other communities.
"The winners all demonstrated a good plan for how they will use social media to enhance or better coordinate their efforts," said Douglas G. Fisher, manager of Economic Development and Community Relations for CL&P and Yankee Gas. “I congratulate South Windsor, Ledyard and the CRCOG on their successful applications, all of which showed focus and an overt willingness to dedicate staff resources to this cause. We look forward to working closely with them and Atlas to help ensure their success.”
Atlas CEO Ben Wright was recently in Connecticut and conducted a Community Builders Institute program, “There’s an App for That, Using Social Media for Community Marketing.” In it, Wright showed how communities can use various social media tools to communicate with their residents and businesses. The institute is a professional development series for state, regional and municipal planning and economic development officials, and is administered by CL&P and Yankee Gas.
The other applicants are being encouraged to continue to apply social media to their initiatives as well. Fisher has offered the resources of CL&P and Yankee Gas' economic development staff to consult with the communities and nonprofits on an ongoing basis, and said additional resources may be earmarked in the future to enable more grants for this purpose. “Social media applications are just beginning to make their mark in municipal and nonprofit management circles,” said Fisher. “It’s important that Connecticut stay abreast of these developments and be seen as a place where innovation continues to happen.”
