CL&P and Yankee Gas Announce Seven Utility Days for 2009

Program to help customers better manage their energy use and utility payments being held in Stamford, New London, New Britain, Waterbury, Hartford, Meriden and Willimantic

BERLIN, Conn., March 11, 2009 – Limited-income customers who may be having trouble paying their Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) or Yankee Gas utility bills can get some help in the next few months as CL&P and Yankee Gas are sponsoring seven Utility Days throughout the state. Customers are invited to join CL&P and Yankee Gas at an upcoming Utility Day to make special payment arrangements and learn ways to reduce their energy bill.

"We know that during this current economic environment some limited-income customers are having a tougher time paying their CL&P or Yankee Gas bills and need some help," said John Ferrantino, director of Customer Solutions, CL&P. "Utility Days provide them with access to services that can assist them in managing their energy use and utility payments. It's 'one-stop shopping' with the local community action agency, legal and utility company representatives all available at the same time."

In 2008, nearly 1,800 customers took advantage of six Utility Day events. "This year, we've added a seventh, Willimantic, and expect attendance at all locations to be higher," added Ferrantino.

Utility Days, which are being held in partnership with Statewide Legal Services, provide financially challenged customers with an opportunity to qualify and sign-up for CL&P and Yankee Gas special assistance programs and services. Customers are asked to bring copies of their latest utility bills. The events also help bring energy awareness to CL&P and Yankee Gas customers through informational and educational displays, giveaways and materials. Additionally, customers will have the opportunity to find out if they are eligible to participate in the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund's (CEEF) free weatherization program. Called WRAP, this in-home program helps customers save energy by repairing leaks and drafts, providing energy-efficient lighting and other services that can help reduce energy costs.
