BERLIN, Conn., April 9, 2008 — Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities System, is expanding its natural gas distribution system in Southington along Route 229 (West Street). The company is extending its existing natural gas main southward along Route 229 in Southington from West Queen Street to the location of the new Target store and the Executive West Retail area. Construction along Route 229 began in early April and will continue for the next few weeks.

The company has been working with state and local officials to ensure the most efficient flow of traffic during this expansion. The work schedule will include Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. until construction is completed. Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction; local police will direct traffic as efficiently as possible.

“Our expansion into this part of Southington will deliver more energy options to local businesses and residents, as well as support economic development in this fast-growing area of Southington,” said John Ferrantino, director of customer solutions for Yankee Gas. “This project also ensures the reliability of our distribution system by increasing the flow of natural gas to an area where demand for it is rapidly growing.”

Bringing natural gas service to this area of Southington will give energy consumers more choice and greater flexibility in the types of equipment they can use in their businesses or homes. The addition of natural gas service also provides environmental benefits that are especially important in Connecticut. Natural gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels and is piped directly to the customer’s business or residence, eliminating the need for storage tanks that take up valuable space and create environmental risks. Residents or businesses in this area of Route 229 interested in converting to natural gas should call Yankee Gas Account Executive Nancy Mala at 203-271-4727.

Contact Yankee Gas Construction Supervisor Al Langland at 203-317-4416 with any questions regarding the construction.
