CL&P, Yankee Gas to Protect Customers From CashPoint Bankruptcy
More than 2,000 customers could have accounts credited

BERLIN, Connecticut, May 10, 2004 – The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) and Yankee Gas Services Company have announced they will honor any verified customer payment that may have been made through CashPoint Network Services, Inc., from April 12 through April 22 of this year.

CashPoint is a private company that provided payment services, primarily facilitating credit card and cash payments, for a number of utility customers. CashPoint is now in bankruptcy as of a result of a petition filed on April 22, 2004. The case is pending in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. In addition to the bankruptcy proceeding, the Connecticut Department of Banking suspended CashPoint’s license on April 22, 2004. CL&P and Yankee Gas are no longer accepting any payments from CashPoint.

“Our customers are very important to us and crediting the accounts of our customers who made verified payments through CashPoint is the right thing to do,” said Cheryl Grisť, chief executive officer of both CL&P and Yankee Gas. “We will continue to protect the interests of our customers and our companies as we work to resolve this complex issue.”

Approximately 2,000 of CL&P’s 1.2 million customers and 50 of Yankee Gas’ 194,000 customers who utilized CashPoint’s services in April 2004 were potentially impacted by CashPoint’s bankruptcy. As this issue has been developing, neither CL&P nor Yankee Gas has assessed any customer a late-payment fee or penalty, nor will any customer have his or her service terminated as a result of a non-credited CashPoint payment.

CL&P customers who have made a payment through CashPoint during the period of April 12 through April 22 are encouraged to contact CL&P’s Customer Service (800/286-2000 or 860/947-2000 in the Hartford / Meriden calling area); customers may also check on their payment history online through www.cl-p.com. Yankee Gas customers can contact Customer Service at 800/989-0900 to verify their payment. Customers who paid with cash through CashPoint are required to provide their receipt as proof of payment to have their account credited; credit-card customers must verify their payment through their credit card company.
