BERLIN, Conn., June 14, 2004 (NYSE: NU) –
Yankee Gas Services Company has received an industry leader accident prevention certificate from the American Gas Association (AGA) for achieving a recordable injury and illness rate below the industry average for OSHA recordable injuries and illnesses in 2003. Yankee’s ranking in AGA’s
2003 Natural Gas Utility and Transmission Industry Occupational Injury and Illness Statistics
is based on data supplied by AGA-member companies. The AGA represents 191 local energy utility companies that deliver natural gas to more than 53 million homes, businesses and industries throughout the United States.
“While it is great to be recognized for our industry-wide safety performance, we still have work to do to improve our performance in the areas of recordable injuries and preventable motor vehicle accidents,” said Dennis E. Welch, president & COO of Yankee Gas, and a member of the AGA’s Board of Directors. “We try not to focus on the safety numbers but place more emphasis on eliminating the safety hazards. We want our employees to be able to go home to their families at the end of the day in the same condition in which they arrived at work.”
According to the AGA, Yankee was ranked 13th among 25 medium-sized U.S. natural gas utilities for its OSHA recordable injury rate. In the area of preventable motor vehicle accidents, Yankee ranked third among the participating natural gas utilities its size. Yankee employees drove more than 6.6 million miles throughout Connecticut in 2003.
