Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, is expanding its natural gas distribution system in Ellington – part of the second phase of a multi-year growth plan to make natural gas available to more homes and businesses throughout the state. The Ellington expansion project includes extending existing mains to serve new areas of the community, including the center of town and an industrial park.
“This expansion project reflects our continued commitment to grow
our gas distribution system, ensuring that communities have the energy options that support local economic development initiatives and consumer expectations," said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “In today's technology-driven economy, having reliable energy, as well as energy options, is critical to business growth and consumer lifestyles."
Expansion supports local growth
“We’re working to attract more business to town and having more energy choices is essential to that process, “ said Mike Stupinski, Ellington’s First Selectman. “Having more utilities and a variety of energy sources is good for everyone – businesses and residents,” he added.
Yankee will work closely with local businesses and homeowners to coordinate installation of service lines and meters, connecting them to the new gas mains. The company also is prepared to assist with equipment selections or recommendations and has financing programs that can help both businesses and homeowners. In addition, potential residential customers within 150 feet of a gas main may be eligible for free installation of a gas service.
Construction route, timing
Yankee will install approximately 23,600 of six inch plastic main in Ellington. Expansion will begin at Yankee's existing main on Route 83, continuing north past the Ellington Airport area. Piping will also be installed from Route 83 west onto Route 140, Maple Street, and Route 286, Main Street, to Church Street in the center of town. Natural gas service will be provided to Center Elementary School and the town’s high school as well as businesses in the center of town. Gas mains will also be installed on Lower Butcher Road, from the intersection of Route 83 west, for future commercial development. Construction is expected to begin in mid-September.
Fuel diversity, environmental benefits
With greater availability of natural gas, Ellington consumers will have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of energy equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. It gives businesses more choices for heating, cooling, manufacturing processing and even cooking. Homeowners also have more options; natural gas not only can be used for heat and hot water, but also for cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters and much more.
Natural gas service also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And it’s piped directly to the home or business, eliminating the need for storage tanks and worry about tank refills.
Residents or business owners who are interested in connecting to natural gas through this expansion project are encouraged to call Yankee’s Business Response Center at 1-888-2YANKEE.
