Yankee Gas Supports Plan to Preserve Open Space, Natural Habitat in Waterbury's South End
Company makes $5,000 donation toward purchase of Pritchard’s Pond

BERLIN, CONN. August 12, 2003 (NYSE:NU) – A plan to preserve more than 25 acres in Waterbury’s south end, known locally as Pritchard’s Pond, has received support from Yankee Gas Services Company, which recently donated $5,000 toward the purchase of the parcel. The property, located off Pearl Lake Road, is a 25.57-acre natural wetland the Waterbury Land Trust Inc. hopes to buy and preserve as open space for the community.
The Waterbury Land Trust, working with the Mohawk Park Community Club, is trying to raise $135,000 to buy the land to preserve it as one of the last natural habitats in the city. With a grant of $81,900 from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program, the Land Trust is seeking corporate support to raise the remainder. If they are successful, they plan to name the parcel the Mataneage Nature Preserve, after the Tunxis chief who sold the area to settlers.
"Once the land is purchased, it will become the first open space in the city of Waterbury," said Antoinette D'Almeida, board member of The Waterbury Land Trust and acting president of the Mohawk Park Community Club. "Preserving the natural wetland and pond will allow children to see geese, turkeys, herons and beavers in their natural habitat -- something city children don't usually see." The Waterbury Land Trust also hopes to create a nature trail on the site for students to learn how wildlife can flourish in the middle of a city.
"Protecting and preserving our natural resources is one of our core values, making this a perfect fit for Yankee. The proposed nature preserve will serve both as a natural habitat for wildlife and a refuge for the citizens of Waterbury for generations to come," said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. "We are especially proud to support this project in an area of the city where we operate a regional work center, in a neighborhood we are part of and where more than 100 of our employees come to work every day."
