MERIDEN, Conn., July 11, 2001 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, has announced a major expansion of its natural gas distribution system in Darien – part of the first phase of a multi-year growth plan to make natural gas available to more homes and businesses throughout the state. This first phase represents an investment of approximately $23 million.
“This expansion project is another reflection of our commitment to grow our gas distribution system, as we agreed to with state regulators when we merged with Northeast Utilities a year ago,” said Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas. “This is an important project because it will not only extend greater choice to more energy consumers in Darien, but also help us to meet the growing demand for natural gas in this region. This particular main extension project will ultimately enhance our ability to serve this growing and economically vital area of Connecticut.”

Expansion brings energy options
“Having natural gas more widely available in Darien will give town businesses and residents an opportunity to choose an alternate fuel, a choice that’s been limited until now," said Peter Curry, Darien's administrative officer. "Having energy choices is all for the good, and as a town, we will be looking at the economic advantages of natural gas for town facilities, too," Curry added.
Yankee will work closely with local businesses and homeowners to coordinate installation of service lines and meters, connecting them to the new gas mains. The company also is prepared to assist with equipment selections or recommendations and has financing programs that can help both businesses and homeowners.

Construction route, timing
Yankee will install nearly 22,200 feet of gas main in Darien, beginning in mid-July. The new main will begin at Yankee's existing distribution system on Route One, near the Norwalk town line, and continue along Route One, connecting to Yankee's existing main near the Stamford town line. This project will serve the entire business district, including municipal buildings and schools.

Fuel diversity, environmental benefits
The planned expansion project will offer a new energy choice to many consumers in Darien, since natural gas has only been available in limited areas of town. With the availability of natural gas, consumers will have more choice and greater flexibility in the types of equipment they can use for their homes or businesses. It gives businesses more choices for heating, cooling, manufacturing processing and even cooking. Homeowners also have more options; natural gas not only can be used for heat and hot water, but also for cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, outdoor grilling, pool, patio and spa heaters and much more.
The addition of natural gas service also provides environmental benefits. Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels. And it’s piped directly to the home or business, eliminating the need for storage tanks.
Residents or business owners who are interested in connecting to natural gas through this expansion project are encouraged to call Yankee’s Business Response Center at 1-888-2YANKEE.
