Yankee Gas Plans Infrastructure Improvements; Mains, Services to be Replaced in Putnam

PUTNAM, Conn., June 26, 2002 (NYSE: NU) – Yankee Gas Services Company will replace approximately 9,000 feet of natural gas mains and 100 related gas services in Putnam. Construction is expected to begin July 2 and will take approximately five months to complete. The main replacement project is part of Yankee’s annual program to upgrade its distribution system. The purpose of this program is to constantly improve its system so that customers continue to receive the safe and reliable service they expect from Yankee.

“We realize this construction activity will inconvenience some residents and businesses and we apologize for that. We’ll be doing this as expeditiously and safely as we can. We also will be replacing the gas services – these are the lines that run from the mains to their homes or businesses – to our customers along the way. We’ll do this free of charge, at their convenience,” said Christopher, L. Beschler, vice president of Operations for Yankee Gas. “This main replacement project is an important part of our ongoing annual system reliability program and we believe it will allow us to better serve this growing community, once it’s complete.” Yankee Gas customers will be contacted to coordinate replacement of their gas services.

The following streets are scheduled for gas main replacement:

· Church Street from Route 44 to 384 Church Street
· Route 44 Pomfret Street from Kennedy Drive to Route 12 South Main Street
· All of Powhattan Street
· All of Mohegan Street
· Route 171 from Church Street to Powhattan Street
· Van Den Noort Street from Route 171 to Green Street
· Addison Street from Church Street to 18 Addison Street
· Ravine Street from Church Street to Gilman Street
· Gilman Street from Ravine Street to 25 Gilman Street construction project to convert to natural gas, since construction crews will be working in the area,” added Beschler. Anyone interested in switching to natural gas can call Yankee’s Business Response Center at 1-888-2YANKEE.
