BERLIN, Conn., April 9, 2003 (NYSE: NU) – As the spring and summer construction season begins, Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, reminds excavators to “call before you dig” to prevent rupturing or damaging utility lines, like natural gas mains and other underground utility services. Call Before You Dig, Inc. (CBYD) is Connecticut’s free, one-call system whose primary objective is to prevent damage to underground utilities in the state of Connecticut. To raise awareness for the system, April has been designated Call Before You Dig Month in Connecticut. An excavator need only call one statewide toll-free number 1-800-922-4455 to notify the CBYD clearinghouse. At no charge to the contractor, CBYD then notifies the utilities or the owners and operators of underground facilities, like Yankee Gas, of proposed excavation work.
Notification to Call Before You Dig is a state law. The law requires anyone who plans to use power or mechanized equipment for excavation to notify the CBYD central clearinghouse at least two full working days before the start of the project. CBYD also must be notified before any permits are secured from any public agency.
“We work with Call Before You Dig and contractors to make sure that underground natural gas lines are properly located and marked before excavation begins,” said Chris Beschler, vice president of Operations, Yankee Gas. “The purpose of the law is to protect the excavator and the public from serious injuries that can result if an underground utility is damaged.”
Once approved for excavation by CBYD, contractors must follow strict guidelines for digging around and near underground utilities. For example, excavators must dig by hand around gas mains. And excavation notices from CBYD must be renewed every 30 days. Call Before You Dig, Inc., is a state regulated, nonprofit organization made up of all public utilities and municipalities within the state of Connecticut.
For more information on specific guidelines, call the CBYD clearinghouse toll-free, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1-800-922-4455. Or, visit CBYD on the Web at www.cbyd.com. Call Before You Dig also sponsors monthly safety meetings, as well as excavator workshops on preventing damage to underground utilities at its Hamden office. For more information, call (203) 248-5502.
