Yankee Gas Executives Hold Leadership Positions with New England Gas Association

BERLIN, CT, April 29, 2002 (NYSE: NU) – Four executives of Yankee Gas Services Company, part of the Northeast Utilities system, have been elected to serve in leadership roles with the New England Gas Association (NEGA) for the next year.
NEGA, based in Needham, Massachusetts, was established in 1926 and is a regional trade association serving New England. Its membership includes all of New England’s local natural gas utilities, the interstate pipeline companies, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer, and over 260 associate member companies. The natural gas utilities serve 2.3 million customers in nearly 500 communities across New England.
Yankee Gas is a member of NEGA.

Dennis E. Welch, president and chief operating officer of Yankee Gas, was elected vice chairman of the NEGA Board of Directors. His term runs from April 1, 2002 through March 31, 2003.
Welch previously served as a director of the NEGA Board before his election to the position of vice chairman. He is also a member of the American Gas Association’s (AGA) Leadership Council. In addition to his service to NEGA and the AGA, Welch sits on the University of Connecticut’s Advisory Board for the School of Engineering and the Board of Trustees for The Nature Conservancy.
Welch holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health and Safety Management from Indiana State University, Terre Haute. He holds a master’s
degree in Business and Human Resource Management from the Hartford Graduate Center of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In addition, Welch completed the Environmental Leadership Program at Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
Welch is a resident of Newington, Conn.

Christopher L. Beschler, vice president of Operations at Yankee Gas, was chosen to serve another one-year term as a director on NEGA’s Operating Division Board of Directors.
Beschler has served on this board since 2000. In addition to his involvement with NEGA, Beschler serves on the Board of Directors of Connecticut’s Call Before You Dig, Inc. He is a Beta Gamma Sigma member of the Honor Society of Collegiate Schools of Business.
Beschler holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree in Business Administration, also from the University of Connecticut.
Beschler is a resident of Berlin, Conn.

William Lee Cranford, Jr., Controller of the Business Services Group at Yankee Gas, has been elected vice chairman of the NEGA Financial and Administrative Division Board of Directors.
Cranford will serve a one-year term in this position. He previously served one year as a director of this Board. In addition to his new role with NEGA, Cranford also serves on the Accounting Advisory Board of Central Connecticut State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Central Connecticut State University.
Cranford is a resident of Bristol, Conn.

John M. Ferrantino, director of Sales & Marketing at Yankee Gas, has been elected to serve a one-year term as vice chairman of NEGA’s Marketing Division Board of Directors.
Ferrantino has served as a director of this group since 2000 and previously held the position of chairman of NEGA’s Direct Marketing Committee. In addition, he serves on the board of the Industrial Center and American Gas Cooling Center. He is also a director of the Connecticut Economic Resource Center (CERC), Inc. Ferrantino holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hartford. He also received the designation of Chartered Industrial Gas Consultant by completing a two-year program of study conducted by the Institute of Gas Technology and the American Gas Association.
Ferrantino is a resident of Rocky Hill, Conn.
