RIBBON CUTTING, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13 AT 9:30 A.M.
BERLIN, Conn., Thursday, November 8 — At 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, Yankee Gas Services Company, the largest distributor of natural gas in Connecticut, will hold a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at its new liquefied natural gas facility at 47 Eagle Street in Waterbury.
Construction began in January 2005, and the tank was filled to capacity on October 31, 2007. This $108 million storage facility holds the vapor equivalent of 1.2 billion cubic feet (BCF) of liquefied natural gas (LNG), or 14.5 million gallons of liquid — enough natural gas to heat 85,000 homes for a month. The facility gives Yankee Gas greater flexibility to manage its natural gas supply portfolio, allowing the company to buy natural gas in periods of low demand and lower cost, store it in liquid form, and use it during the coldest days of winter when prices are usually much higher, or when demand may exceed the ability of pipelines to transport natural gas to Connecticut.
In addition to executives from Northeast Utilities, the following are expected to be in attendance: Waterbury Mayor Michael Jarjura, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Department of Public Utility Control Commissioner James Fleming.
