LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS TANK FULL AND READY TO SERVE YANKEE GAS CUSTOMERS THIS WINTER
Ribbon-cutting ceremony November 13 at 9:30 a.m.
BERLIN, Conn., November 1, 2007 — At 7:15 a.m. on October 31, Yankee Gas, the largest distributor of natural gas in Connecticut, finished filling its new liquefied natural gas storage tank in Waterbury, Conn. The company began filling the tank in June.
“Our customers will begin benefiting immediately this winter season, and will benefit for decades, because this facility gives us greater flexibility to manage our natural gas supply portfolio,” said Raymond P. Necci, president and chief operating officer, Yankee Gas. “In periods of low demand and lower cost, we can purchase natural gas, store it in liquid form, and use it during the coldest days of winter when prices are usually much higher, or when demand may exceed the ability of pipelines to transport natural gas to Connecticut.”
The $108 million facility includes a tank that can store enough natural gas to heat 85,000 homes for a month. Construction of the facility began in January 2005. On June 1, 2007, Yankee Gas received approval from the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) to start filling the tank. “Over the past three years, the project team and its contractors have worked tirelessly with the Gas Pipeline Safety Unit at the DPUC, and the facility will continue to be subject to their oversight,” said LNG Plant Manager Tom Kennedy.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for November 13 at 9:30 a.m. at the facility.
