BERLIN, CONN., January 7, 2004 (NYSE:NU) – To help Connecticut businesses learn more about their energy options and getting the most value for their energy dollars, Yankee Gas Services Company is working with the Manufacturing Alliance of Connecticut (MAC) to present a program on distributed generation. The meeting will be held January 21 at 9 a.m. in the MAC offices, 1525 Hamilton Avenue, Waterbury.

"It's easy to get locked into the thinking that buying at the lowest cost and reducing usage are the only ways to control energy costs," said Jeff Gaudiosi, vice president for Regulatory Affairs at MAC. "Yankee Gas' presentation on distributed generation will help businesses understand that there are many strategies available to manage energy spending."

Distributed generation (DG) is the use of small-scale power generation located close to the load being served. DG is a form of cogeneration where a single system powered by natural gas is used to produce two forms of energy -- thermal energy and electricity. DG is primarily used in settings with a high demand for thermal energy or hot water as well as electricity. Manufacturing plants, printing companies, hospitals, nursing homes and greenhouses are potentially good candidates for DG. Facilities that require high-quality, reliable electricity to maintain sensitive equipment can also benefit from DG.

Tim Callahan, Marketing Development engineer for Yankee Gas, will review natural gas technologies like microturbines, reciprocating engines and fuel cells that are used for DG, explaining the advantages of each in various settings. Callahan works with vendors and other industry and governmental organizations to learn about and promote the newest natural gas technologies to Yankee Gas customers. "It's our job to help our customers find ways to build their widgets more efficiently so they can remain competitive," Callahan said.
