BERLIN, Connecticut – October 24, 2008 –
The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) and Yankee Gas Services Company today announced they are doubling their financial commitment to Operation Fuel in 2008, up to $200,000, and are asking CL&P and Yankee Gas customers to get involved by enrolling in the Operation Fuel contribution program online or by phone.
Operation Fuel is a private, nonprofit program that offers emergency energy assistance to state residents who do not qualify for government support programs, or who have exhausted their state benefits. Last winter, the organization provided over $3 million in energy assistance and served over 6,000 households.
"More Connecticut residents need assistance with their energy costs than ever before," said Raymond P. Necci, president and chief operating officer of CL&P and Yankee Gas. "While I am proud to say that CL&P and Yankee Gas are the state’s largest corporate sponsors of Operation Fuel, we can’t do it alone. We’re stepping up, and we hope customers from all of the state’s energy providers do, too. As Operation Fuel puts it, ‘One in five of us can’t afford to heat our homes. But, the other four can change that.’ By participating, you’re not just adding a dollar (or more), you’re adding hope."
By registering online via either of the company Web sites - www.cl-p.com/addhope or www.yankeegas.com/addhope, customers can select a monthly contribution amount of $1 to Operation Fuel that will be added to their bill. By calling the toll-free Operation Fuel contribution line - 866-855-8686 - customers can elect to make a monthly contribution of between $1 and $10 that will be added to their bill. "Whether you go online to register or you call, our new customer service system makes it easy to contribute," said Necci.
Necci made the announcement during this morning's energy assistance fund-raising campaign on WDRC-AM's "Brad Davis Show."
"Operation Fuel is so thankful to Connecticut Light and Power and Yankee Gas for their continued support in providing energy assistance to Connecticut families in need," said Pat Wrice, executive director of Operation Fuel. "By doubling their financial commitment to Operation Fuel, it is a fantastic opportunity to challenge Connecticut residents to also donate to Operation Fuel through the Add-a-Dollar program."
CL&P and Yankee Gas customers can also donate through the Add-a-Dollar check off program on their utility bills or by visiting Operation Fuel’s Web site at www.operationfuel.org.
Last year, customers and shareholders of Northeast Utilities, the parent company of CL&P and Yankee Gas, donated more than $408,000 to Operation Fuel. CL&P and Yankee Gas also offer a variety of programs to assist customers who may have difficulty paying their electric bills. To find out more, visit www.cl-p.com or www.yankeegas.com..
