WMECo Crews Travel to Maryland to Help Restore Power

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 1, 2012 – Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) employees will be departing early Monday morning to assist the hundreds of thousands of customers who remain without power in the wake of fierce storms that passed through the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions on Friday.

Three utility crews and a supervisor will join 17 fellow Northeast Utilities crews and supervisors from NStar, Connecticut Light & Power and Public Service of New Hampshire in assisting customers of First Energy Corp. The employees will report to First Energy's Williamsport, Maryland offices later in the day.

WMECo and its employees are no strangers to helping those in need. In recent years, they have assisted utilities and customers as far away as Florida and the Midwest. Utility crews from across the country also came to assist WMECo last year when the unprecedented snow storm hit the region in October causing severe and widespread power outages.

When deciding the correct number of workers to send in response to mutual aid requests, WMECo is careful to ensure a sufficient number of crews are kept locally to respond to any damage or outages that could be caused by potential thunderstorms or other severe weather.

Western Massachusetts Electric Company, a Northeast Utilities company (NYSE:NU), serves approximately 210,000 customers in 59 communities throughout western Massachusetts and is committed to the environment, economic development and the health of the communities it serves.
