WMECo & NSTAR Sending Workers to New Hampshire as Ice Storm Approaches

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 20, 2013) – As forecasts call for a weekend storm to potentially bring damaging ice accumulations to northern New England, Western Massachusetts Electric and NSTAR are preparing to assist Northeast Utilities sister-company PSNH in its response effort. A total of nearly 200 workers – approximately 50 from WMECo and 140 from NSTAR – will leave Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon for Manchester, NH to be on-hand and ready to work when needed. NSTAR will also be sending its two new mobile communications units to help Public Service of New Hampshire with localized dispatching of line crews.

“The customer benefits of a combined Northeast Utilities are particularly clear in situations like this,” said Craig Hallstrom, President of NSTAR and WMECo. “Whenever emergencies arise, our companies and our workers stand ready to help each other restore power to customers as quickly and as effectively as possible.”

Though the latest forecast is calling for rain across Massachusetts, it appears likely some areas of New Hampshire could get up to one-half inch of ice, mainly north of the Concord area. That amount of ice would cause damage by collecting on trees and bringing down limbs and branches onto electrical equipment. WMECo and NSTAR crews are no strangers to working in such harsh conditions, having assisted in restoration efforts in the aftermath of past ice storms and having most recently worked to restore power during and after Blizzard Nemo earlier this year.
