WMECo Monitoring Threat for Isolated Thunderstorms

Crews secured, customers advised to prepare

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 26, 2012 – Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) is monitoring and preparing for isolated severe thunderstorms forecast for western Massachusetts this evening. The threatening weather creates potential for extended power outages and customers are advised to prepare. WMECo has placed crews on call and obtained additional contract resources to assist with any necessary restoration efforts.

WMECo reminds customers to charge cell phones and laptops in advance of the anticipated storms. Customers should have storm kits handy, containing a flashlight with batteries for every family member, a battery-operated radio, important telephone numbers, their WMECo account information, clean drinking water and first aid supplies. Since the storms may bring lightning, it’s a good idea to unplug sensitive electronic equipment and appliances before they strike.

Customers who are dependent on life support have been notified by WMECo’s medical alert system to seek alternate arrangements in the event that service is interrupted.

Customers should report power outages to 781-4300 (within the Springfield area) or (877) OK-WMECO (877) 659-6326.
