Hurricane Sandy - WMECo Update
Customers are encouraged to make preparations and prepare a storm kit

Springfield (October 28, 2012) – Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) crews are ready to respond to the power outages that are likely to impact western Massachusetts and a large portion of New England, beginning Monday, due to Hurricane Sandy. WMECo is also reminding its customers to prepare for outages.

What We’re Expecting - The current forecast for western Massachusetts calls for rain to begin this afternoon with winds increasing through the evening and lasting into Tuesday. Based on the significance of this storm power outages are likely and customers are urged to be prepared. All WMECo employees are committed to their storm assignments, which may be different from their regular jobs, to help ensure a high level of customer service during this storm.

Preparation - Customers should consider how they will respond, especially in the event of a power outage that lasts for several days. Review your family emergency preparedness plan, and obtain supplies – such as water, batteries and fuel for any emergency generator. Tips and reminders on how to prepare are posted on the WMECo web site.

Staying Safe – Never touch a downed wire. Assume any downed line is a live wire, and dangerous. Report downed lines to WMECo at 413-781-4300 in the Springfield area, and 877-OK-WMECo (877-659-6326) outside of the Springfield calling area.

Restoring Power – WMECo will begin work restoring power as soon as it is safe to do so. WMECo is a participant in regional mutual aid groups, which work to coordinate assistance. Outside line workers have started arriving today to assist local crews in the restoration effort.

Staying Informed - WMECo customers can access an outage map containing community-by-community outage information at
wmeco.com so they can track the company’s restoration progress. All customers, including smart phone users, can also report outages via the company’s website. This storm brings the potential of widespread power outages, so WMECo reminds customers to learn more about storm and outage preparations on the company’s website.
