WMECo Customers to See Slight Rate Decrease Next Year

Springfield, Mass. (December 24, 2013) —WMECo customers will see a slight decrease in the supply portion of their electric bills beginning January 1st. WMECo’s new residential electricity supply rate was approved by the Department of Public Utilities, will reduce the cost for the average residential customer by approximately $0.07 a month. The Basic Service rate scheduled to go into effect is $0.08303, a decrease from the current price of $0.08317. For a WMECo customer using 500 kilowatt-hours a month, the total bill will decrease from $87.32 to $87.25.

As a regulated distribution company, WMECo purchases electricity from suppliers and passes the cost directly to customers on the company’s Basic Service supply rate, with no profit to WMECo. By law, the Basic Service price for residential customers changes twice a year, on January 1st and July 1st.
