As Temps Plunge WMECo Offers Programs to Conserve Energy and Help in Paying Bills

Springfield, Massachusetts (January 15, 2013)Winter weather will soon be bearing down once again on Western Massachusetts. As the snow and frigid temperatures return, WMECo is reminding customers it’s not too late to take advantage of programs the company offers to help keep homes warm and heating bills down.

“New England winters can be brutally cold and we want to help keep our customers warm,” said Penni Conner, Chief Customer Officer for Northeast Utilities, parent company of WMECo. “We have a variety of programs available to assist them, from making a home more energy efficient to billing and payment options.”

Programs and services available to WMECo customers include:

Home Energy Assessment – Provides homeowners and renters with an energy assessment by an authorized contractor. An energy assessment professional will test for drafts and air leaks, and can also make on-the-spot improvements such as caulking and sealing air leaks, installing compact fluorescent light bulbs and installing hot water-saving low-flow showerheads. WMECo will even pay up to 75% of the cost (up to $2000) to install additional insulation, air sealing and more. If extensive work is required customers may also qualify for a zero interest loan up to $20,000. For more information go to: www.masssave.com.

Do-it-Yourself Energy-Saving Tips – WMECO offers low- and no-cost tips for customers looking to begin saving energy right away. Simple steps, such as opening drapes and curtains on a sunny day or lowering thermostat temperatures by a few degrees, can help. For more information go to: http://ow.ly/gPDqe

The Mass Good Neighbor Energy FundWMECo and its customers support the Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund that has provided energy assistance to hundreds-of-thousands of residents in temporary crisis. For eligibility information go to: http://www.magoodneighbor.org/assistance.html

NUStart Program – Helps income-eligible WMECo customers maintain year-round electric service. Customers can reduce and eliminate past-due balances if they pay their budget amount on time each month.
