WMECo Fundraiser Benefits Schools and Promotes Energy Efficiency

Springfield, Mass. (February 6, 2013) – One hundred percent profit for a school holding a fundraiser is practically unheard of—but that’s exactly what West Springfield’s Mitteneague Elementary School will earn as the latest local school taking part in WMECo’s and Mass Save’s Energy Efficiency Fundraiser. Students will be selling Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Advanced Power Strips provided at no cost to the school.

“This is a great program that’s all about the children, and we’re very proud of its success,” said WMECo President and COO Peter Clarke. “Since its inception this fundraiser has pumped tens of thousands of dollars into struggling schools, while teaching the importance of energy efficiency, conservation, and the rewards that come with it”

Students can sell as many as they can. Last year the top-5 selling schools earned close to $22,000, with the top-earner raising close to $7,000.

This morning a team of energy efficiency experts put on a lively performance engaging students –
turning them into Sherlock Holmes-style energy sleuths, looking for waste, and ways to save and conserve power. The students were given information, motivation, and the tools they need to make sales. At the end of the selling period, WMECo will tally the sales and deliver the products to the school on February 27th.

Public and private schools in WMECo’s service territory, grades K-8, can still sign up for the fundraiser.
