As Sandy Moves North, WMECo Is Ramping-up and Reminding the Public to be Ready for Possible Power Outages

Customers are encouraged to make preparations and prepare a storm kit

Springfield (October 26, 2012) – With Hurricane Sandy moving its way northward and forecasted to impact our region early next week, WMECo is making preparations for significant impact on the electric grid. The Emergency Response Plan (ERP) has been activated including notifying life support customers and municipalities. The ERP provides a systematic and organized response to power outages caused by high winds, heavy rain, flooding or other major disruptions to the system.

“WMECo has already more than doubled the size of its line crew compliment, and continues to secure more line workers from as far away as Michigan,” said Bob Coates, Vice President of Customer Operations at WMECo. “We’ve activated our municipal liaisons -- the people who will be in direct contact with town leaders and first responders. These liaisons have access to key information about critical facilities within their towns and cities. This information coupled with the town outage maps will further enhance communications for impacted municipalities.”

All WMECo employees are committed to their storm assignments, which may be different from their regular jobs, to help ensure a high level of customer service during this storm.

WMECo customers can access an outage map containing community-by-community outage information at
wmeco.com so they can track the company’s restoration progress. All customers, including smart phone users, can also report outages via the company’s website. This storm brings the potential of widespread power outages, so WMECo reminds customers to learn more about storm and outage preparations on the company’s website. Western Massachusetts Electric Company, a Northeast Utilities company (NYSE:NU), serves approximately 210,000 customers in 59 communities throughout western Massachusetts and is committed to the environment, economic development and the health of the communities it serves.
