Manchester, NH August 27, 2009****A massive 242-ton piece of electrical equipment will be moved from Manchester to Deerfield, as part of PSNH’s ongoing campaign to increase the reliability of the electric system. The schedule calls for the 485-thousand pound transformer to be moved, weather permitting, during overnight hours between 8:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. beginning on Sunday evening, August 30th.
The transformer will be moved by a heavy hauler* with a combined weight of about 720,000 pounds. The travel route has been developed in partnership with the NH Department of Transportation and coordinated with local officials in the communities along the route. Significant planning has been done to protect existing roadway infrastructure.
Travel Advisory - Delays are expected for motorists traveling along the route that the equipment will be moved. State Police and local police officers will escort the heavy hauler, which will occasionally pull over to allow backed up traffic to pass.
Travel Schedule and Route - The convoy will move from Manchester to the Deerfield Fairgrounds during the overnight hours Sunday – Monday, August 30th and 31st, along the following route:
From Manchester along Elm Street/Webster Street; along Rt 3 to Hooksett, Rt 27. Rt 27 to Candia to Deerfield, Rt 43 (the “Four Corners” intersection). Rt 43 to Deerfield Fairgrounds. This initial move is expected to begin sometime after 10:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, starting at the rail tracks at 300 Elm Street.
From the Deerfield Fairgrounds, the equipment will be moved overnight on Monday – Tuesday to Rollins Excavating, on Rt 43, where the heavy hauler will then be adjusted in order to safely traverse the narrower roadways of Parade Road, Nottingham Road and Cate Road. The last portion of the trip, from Rt 43 to Cate Road is expected to take place on the evening of Wednesday, September 2nd. The transformer will be installed at the PSNH substation on Cate Road in Deerfield in order to help meet future expected growth in electric demand and to provide a backup to existing equipment.
