BERLIN, Connecticut, October 15, 2009 –– High school students throughout Connecticut are being encouraged to consider sustainable, environmental projects that could earn their school plenty of “green” to help implement those strategies and make their schools operate in a more environmentally beneficial manner.
It is the second consecutive year Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) is sponsoring the Live Green – Win Green contest among Connecticut high schools within the company’s service area. Students, through a chosen faculty advisor or school administrator, are challenged to demonstrate what their school currently does to conserve energy and be more environmentally responsible, and to propose a significant future “green” project they would like to implement at their school.
The winning high school will receive a $20,000 award from CL&P to help fund their proposed project. Three other schools will be chosen as runners-up and receive $5,000 awards from the company for their projects.
“At CL&P, we believe that the lifelong changes needed to conserve energy and protect the environment start with our youth,” said Jeff Butler, president and chief operating officer of CL&P. “We not only want to reward students for what they already do to manage energy and protect the environment, but we want students, together with their schools, to make a real commitment to making effective and lasting changes for the future. And we want to help them do it.”
Live Green – Win Green is open to all high schools within CL&P’s service area. Student organizations, classes, clubs, individual students and groups of students are eligible to participate with the supervision of a school administrator or faculty advisor. Participants must produce a two-minute video showcasing what they and their fellow students are doing to conserve energy and/or make their school environmentally friendly. Plus each submission must include a 1,000-word essay on how their school would use the grant money to “go green.” Multiple entries per school are allowed. A panel of independent judges comprised of educators, environmental and community leaders will review the submissions and declare the winners.
Contest submissions must be made online at www.livegreenwingreen.com by a school administrator or faculty advisor between November 3 and November 25, 2009. Accepted entries will be posted on the contest Web site and the general public will have its chance to vote for their favorites from December 1 through December 12, 2009. The entry with the most votes – the “People’s Choice” – will automatically advance to the finalist round. An additional fourteen finalists will be selected by CL&P. Winners will be announced in January, 2010.
