BERLIN, Conn. (April 29, 2013) – After spending weeks on the road, water and railway a new piece of electrical equipment will finish its journey from Nurnberg, Germany, to a Connecticut Light & Power facility in Wallingford.
The final five-mile leg of the trans-Atlantic trip will happen Tuesday night, making its way from the railroad in Durham to CL&P’s electric switching station in Wallingford. The new equipment, a shunt reactor, is similar in size to a large garden shed and weighs more than 260-thousand pounds. It’s designed to improve the stability and efficiency of Connecticut’s high voltage transmission system. The transportation and installation of the shunt reactor will not interrupt electric service to any homes or businesses in the area.
State and local police will be escorting the delivery convoy sometime after 8 p.m. - a time when traffic is light, to minimize inconvenience to residents. The delivery schedule is weather dependent, and adverse conditions could cause a delay of two or three days.
The route from Durham to Wallingford is as follows:
· Exit Airline Industrial Park Road in Durham onto Route 157 South
· Turn right onto Route 68/Durham Road, heading west
· Cross into Wallingford along Route 68
· Turn right, continuing on Route 68/Barnes Road
· Turn right onto Research Parkway
· Turn right onto Carpenter Lane
· Turn left into the CL&P Switching Station
