CL&P Launches Home Energy Reports Program
Pilot expanded to large-scale program to help more CL&P customers save money
by reducing home energy use

BERLIN, Conn. (April 17, 2014) – Starting this month, Connecticut Light & Power will send more than 340,000 customers their first, personalized Home Energy Report, a new, innovative tool providing customers with essential information designed to help them improve the energy efficiency in their homes and save on monthly electricity bills.

“CL&P is extending this program broadly because we know that our customers need energy solutions that are customized to their own homes," said CL&P Director of Energy Efficiency Matt Gibbs. “Through the Energize Connecticut initiative, the Home Energy Reports program provides customers with practical information and resources that will help them save energy and money."

The free report is designed to help customers assess and track their energy use. It shows customers how their home’s energy use compares to an anonymous group of 100 similarly-sized and equipped homes in their area. The report also includes customized tips for no-cost, low-cost, and long-term investment options to reduce energy use. Additionally, customers can go online and set energy reduction goals, as well as learn more in-depth information about how their home consumes energy.

CL&P has partnered with Opower to design, prepare and deliver the information-based Home Energy Reports. Pairing behavioral science with cutting-edge data analytics, the Opower platform provides its utility partners with an engagement channel to motivate large-scale reductions in energy use among their customers.

An additional 30,000 CL&P customers will also have the opportunity to be enrolled in Home Energy Reports when they participate in Home Energy Solutions, a convenient in-home service designed to help you save money on your energy bills and make your home more comfortable year round.

A total of 34,000 CL&P customers participated in the Home Energy Reports pilot from 2011 through 2013. The pilot delivered over $1.3 million in total cost savings and approximately 14,350 megawatt hours of electricity savings, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity 900 homes would typically consume in one year. 17,000 customers previously enrolled in the pilot will continue to receive reports either in the mail or via email.

Customers enrolled in Home Energy Reports can choose to opt-out of the program at any time.
