Berlin, CT - March 14, 2010 - As of 9 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) reports that 65,183 customers remain without power, down from a high of over 85,000 as a result of the Nor’easter storm that hit the region this weekend. The majority of these outages are primarily in the Stamford, Norwalk and Greenwich areas. As we are in the process of determining the full magnitude of storm damage due to the significant rain and damaging high winds, we are not providing exact restoration projections, but expect it may take several days in some areas. Updates can be found at the Storm Center link on www.cl-p.com.

Over 200 utility and tree crews are working around the clock to restore service to customers including crews from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Ohio and Canada. More crews are expected to arrive on Monday. This will allow us to maintain safe schedules for the crews while working to repair service to our customers.

Storm Summary

Beginning late Saturday evening, this storm delivered significant rainfall and damaging wind gusts in some areas. The heavy rain made the soil very soft and the high winds (gusts reported at over 60 miles per hour) caused many trees to uproot, topple over and crush whatever was in their path. The resulting damage included hundreds of broken poles, downed wires and broken electrical equipment. The rebuild will be extensive in the heavily damaged areas.

We are in the process of supporting state and municipal workers efforts to safely re-open roads. We have responded to over 280 emergency 911 calls since the storm began.
